Bob Snyder

Bob Snyder

Born in Danville, Indiana, the son of professional musicians, Bob Snyder played his first professional engagement at the age of eight. He started playing alto sax in the high school band while in the third grade. At the age of ten he was part of a family group called "The Hillbilly Kids" which appeared across central Indiana. At eleven years of age he was playing clarinet with the Hoosier Symphony at Canterbury College in Danville. He appeared on the Horace Heidt Amateur Hour in Terre Haute at the age of thirteen, and became a featured performer with the Indiana State Legion Band in Indianapolis.

Bob won first place awards in the All State Indiana Music Contest all four years of high school. Entering Butler University for a semester, he then went on active duty in the Marine Corps. An opportunity to audition for the Air Force band in Washington DC led to him becoming a member of the Airmen of Note and the original Air Force VIP Band. After eight years of active duty and a final stint in the original Air Force Academy Band, Bob left the service and embarked on his civilian career as a band leader and sideman with groups including the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and the Ted Weems Orchestra. Bob became a member of the Memphis Horns at Stax Records as a studio musician. In 1966 he moved to Detroit, Michigan as a member of the Motown Recording Orchestra and a staff member of the WJR Radio Band.

In 1971 Bob played a benefit in Cleveland, Ohio where Lionel Hampton was also performing. Lionel invited Bob to join him on a tour of Europe, which included the Iron Curtain countries. Bob accepted the invitation and continued to appear with Lionel Hampton until the 90's.

In 1984 Bob found a new position as Music Director of the Grand Hotel, a summer resort on Mackinac Island, Michigan. He retired from that position in 1999-2004 and currently travels around the country doing concerts. Bob and his wife Jan own a home on Marco Island, Florida, where he performs at The Deck Restaurant during season.

Bob has a hit recording of "Amazing Grace" on the Saxy Records Inc. label and many of his concerts are performed in churches around the country.

"Snyder takes the listener from New Orleans' Storyville, to New York's 52nd street...all the time preaching the Gospel that is the foundation of JAZZ (American Music) and which remains today the very spirit and soul of our society. His music is destined to become legendary in our culture, along with Armstrong. Ellington, and Coletrane...I can't get enough of this guy's music!"

Peter Dillon, WAZR Radio, Woodstock, Virginia

"Listening to Bob play these songs is like a nice warm bath for the soul."

Dave Hogan, WISE Radio, Asheville, North Carolina

"Snyder is an example of the eclectic mix of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, influenced by the genius of Sidney Bechet and the contemporanaity of a Kenny G. Plus his own culturally diverse background on the tenor sax ranging from big bands and the Memphis Horns to Motown. The most outstanding and exciting elements of his performance are the passion, fire and just plain good time that he has while playing."

Bill Randle, WRMR Radio, Clevland, Ohio

"The Gospel according to Bob Snyder is done with music. He has become a musical disciple."

Eddie Hubbard, ABC Radio Network

"Bob Snyder is beyond question the finest clarinet player I have ever heard. When he plays "Amazing Grace" the notes speak. It is not just music, it is inspiration. You will be blessed by the music of Bob Snyder. After hearing him play, I am finally convinced, the clarinet and saxophone will make it to heaven."

Dr, John Sullivan, Executive Director - Treasurer
Florida Baptist Convention

"I consider Bob Snyder the best clarinet player in the world. I rank him with my old boss, Benny Goodman. I have played and toured with Bob for many years, and I can tell you Bob knows how to swing."

Lionel Hampton

"I don't think there is a more beautiful recording of "Amazing Grace" anywhere than Bob Snyder's. And he brings the same genius to every song he plays. That makes this an exceptional collection."

Pat Boone
"As a committee member for the Danville Community High School Alumni Association, and 1967 graduate, I wanted to thank you for a very entertaining and inspiring speech, given on April 16.     Your message was "right on" about Danville, and your own story was good news for the students.    Your nomination and induction was well-deserved, and you are a wonderful example to young folks, showing you can live your dream."
Kind regards,
Suzy (Brock) Freeman
